Introducing Web Archiving

Regulators and Courts stipulate that websites and social media cannot be treated differently to other electronic information. Yet websites and social media are technically very different, consequently, a new archiving method is required: native-format web archiving.

Background

US Department of Justice Building, Washington DC

Regulators (FINRA Regulatory Notice 10-06, SEC Rule 17a-4) and Courts (In Arteria Prop. Pty Ltd. v. Universal Funding V.T.O., Inc., 2008 WL 4513696 (D.N.J. Oct. 1, 2008)) stipulate that websites and social media cannot be treated differently to other electronic information. Yet websites and social media are technically very different, being composed of many individual files, rich media, links, and interactive code – any of which may be stored on servers or services anywhere on the Internet.

Consequently, traditional archival methods developed for emails, electronic documents, file systems, etc., cannot comprehensively capture websites and social media.

A new method is required: native-format web archiving.
